892 - はもちろん

Note about NDL scheduling: I kind of messed it up this last weekend.

We're taking weekends and US holidays off now, so a lesson shouldn't have been sent on Saturday, Sunday, or Monday (a holiday), but I accidentally sent a lesson on Saturday that should have been sent yesterday (Tuesday). I'm guessing most people out there don't care, but I thought I'd mention it.

My humble apologies. _(-_-)_

Now, lesson time...

JLPT N3: はもちろん (of course; naturally)

We've seen the word もちろん, meaning "of course," many times in other lessons.

In this lesson, for example, we saw:

日本語って難しいよね。もちろんいい意味でね。
にほんご って むずかしい よ ね。 もちろん いい いみ で ね。
Japanese is hard, huh? In a good way, of course.
Literally: "Japanese (language) + って + difficult + よ + ね. + of course + good + meaning + で + ね."

もちろん, when it comes right after , also has a grammatical use. We say:

Thing-1 はもちろん Thing-2

...where "Thing-1" is something that is "naturally" or "of course" a certain way. Then "Thing-2" is something else that is also more or less a certain way.

An example will explain it better than me:

妊娠中は、タバコはもちろんお酒も控えなければいけません。
にんしんちゅう は、 タバコ はもちろん おさけ も ひかえなければ いけません。
Naturally, one must abstain from smoking while pregnant, and this is also true of alcohol.
Literally: “while pregnant + は + tobacco / smoking + は + of course + alcohol + も + must refrain from / must abstain from.”

Thing-1 is smoking.
Thing-2 is alcohol.
One should abstain from both when pregnant.

The Japanese is arranged as so:

While pregnant, smoking はもちろん alcohol also must be abstained from.
→ Naturally, one must abstain from smoking while pregnant, and this is also true of alcohol.

👷 Construction 👷

This is relatively straightforward:

NOUN +(PARTICLE)+ はもちろん

Note that a particle is not always necessary. That's why it didn't appear in our first example above.

Two more examples:

このゲームは一人はもちろん、大人数でも楽しめます。
この ゲーム は ひとり で はもちろん、 おおにんずう で も たのしめます。
Of course, this game is fun to play alone, but it can also be enjoyed with a lot of people.
Literally: “this + game + は + one person + で + は + of course, + large number of people + で + も + can enjoy.”

このことは友達はもちろんのこと、家族にも言っていない。
この こと は ともだち に はもちろん の こと、 かぞく に も いっていない。
Naturally, I haven't told my friends. What’s more, I haven't told my family.
Literally: “this + thing + は + friends + に + は + of course + の + thing, + family + に + も + haven’t said (=am not saying).”

Last one:

女性解放運動は、女性にとってはもちろん、男性にとっても重要なことである。
じょせい かいほう うんどう は、 じょせい にとって はもちろん、 だんせい にとって も じゅうような こと である。
Of course, the women’s rights movement is important for women, but it is also important for men, as well.
Literally: “women’s rights movement (=female / woman + liberation + movement) + は, + female / woman + for / to (=にとって) + は + of course, + male / man + for / to (=にとって) + も + important + thing + である.”

↑ Confused by that use of にとって, above? If so, maybe go and read this lesson: [NDL #879] - JLPT N3: にとって.

Finished!

Slowly but surely, you are becoming the JLPT N3 master. *_*
