Course Prerequisities

Before we get into learning actual Japanese sentences (which is much easier than you may be expecting), there are a few structural things that we need to get out of the way.

In particular, you’ll need to understand 3 things before continuing with this course:

  1. How should you organize your studies?
  2. How is Japanese pronounced?
  3. How is Japanese written?

For #1, please consult the HJS Core sub-course of the Hacking Japanese Supercourse.

For #2 and #3, please go through our Kana Mastery Course.

WARNING: We do not use romaji in this course. If you can’t read ひらがな (hiragana) and カタカナ (katakana), then please study the pronunciation and writing course before you start this one. If you know a bit of hiragana and katakana, but you're still not too confident in your ability, then please print out the PDF at the bottom of this page and use it as a guide as you work your way through the course.

So let's get started.

I’ll do my best to make this at least 1% more interesting than Wikipedia…
